A New Song about Alameda: 'Isle of Zombies'

It's by a San Francisco-based, self-described "experimental pop duo" called Super Adventure Club.

A reader sent over a link to this brand-new (the group's website says it was released on Sept. 10) song about Alameda.

It's called Alameda: Isle of Zombies.

And, while I am a reasonably astute analyzer of lyrics, I can't really figure out the meaning. Except that maybe it's saying we're zombies here.

You can take a listen, but there's this:

Dark is the night, dark is the Bay
Dark are the ferries that take you away
Off to the island, off to the island of zombies

And this:

You were living in the mission for a year or two
but the lure of easy parking was calling to you
Just like a call, just like a call from your mommy
You took the ferry, took the ferry and you became a zombie

Ouch!

You can read about Super Adventure Club on their website. And hear Isle of Zombies here

Your thoughts about the song? Tell us in the comments.

Oh, that's just pitiful. So the songwriter's friend (lover?) left the tribe for a life somewhere else; rather than accept it, the lyricist not-very-convincingly trashtalks the friend's choice. Ho hum. As an Alamedan by choice,I was hoping for something more specific, on-target, satirical, and funny: roaming bands of zombified politicians roaming Bay Farm, salivating over human flesh and political contributions from developers, Alameda'a July 4th parade that once was a half-day ordeal but now goes until Labor Day, etc.

The real consolation is that the lyrics are so excruciatingly awful. "Mommy" rhymes with "zombie"? I don't think so. I think some San Franciscans are just jealous. I've heard it called "white bread" Alameda and "Alameda, that quaint little bistro." Zombie Isle is a new one on me.

Very weird. Actually kind of a catchy song, but I agree with Jack that the author was just looking for something to pick on. Riding a bike that's *not* a fixie is a bad thing? Come on!

BTW if you are looking for a *quality* song about zombies, may I suggest the wonderful Jonathan Coulton:

Hey, if the song takes off, we can exploit it. "Thriller" dance gathering on the Hornet, Zombie Tours, Zombie Pub Crawl, Zombie Wine Tasting. Maybe this is a good thing!

i love the song, regardless of the motivation (mr. mingo may just be correct!). i also love alameda. loosen up, everyone. and be grateful there are people that don't want to live here. otherwise, we'd be just like san francisco! so don't tell anyone how very cool and awesome it really is...

Well said, Bram!
Perhaps it's time to invest in zombie wear and do an Alameda lip dub like Grand Rapids's:

Why so many negative comment , I love thast song , it has a great healthy effect and was prescribed by my pharmacist as a laxative {it worked}, the music remind me the carcasse of a car dragged on the pavement on it's way to the crusher off Alameda ,By the way we Zombie talk , help each other , our street and doorway do not smell urine as they do in San Francisco and we do not shoot each other in the back .......

This may explain all the police blotter arrests for insanity. "Insanity" is police code for zombie.

I like it too. "Music is the best."

The music IS good, much better than the lyrics. The problem with the musically apt is that so few of them are good at lyrics. (The reverse is also true of good lyricists.) Where would Elton be without Taupen, George Gershwin without his lovely wife Ira, Simon without Garfunkel, Rimsky without Korsikov?

It's hard to write even a good Moon-June-Spoon song, much less a Zombie-Hombre-Flambé song. Leave it to a pro.

I dunno... you're a lot more likely to find zombies staggering around San Francisco than Alameda.

Speaking of zombies, Saturday 10/29 at 7pm is Thrill the World day - there's a large local group meeting at Studio One in Oakland. www.thrilltheworldoakland.com
Get your zombie on and come dance for charity.
Now, looking at the other Alameda patch headlines above... we have dead zones, we have missing squirrels, and we have walkability - or is it... lurchability??? Clearly there's a grand zombie conspiracy going on.

the missing squirel is not a conspiracy the zombies have been eating them slowly roasted on the fire pit at crowm memorial beach , however if you are still missing them , I will be very happy to trapp a few dozen from my back yard along with possum and ra-ccoon ...all are public nuisance and spread deadly disease . Oh but it's a feral offense punishable by $ 5000 for each animal , like if the racoon and possum were on the endanger species .....

Joel, I hear it's also a federal offense. One problem with eating raccoon is that they may carry parasites that affect brain function, particularly spelling. So I'd have to pass on that.

Thanks Alana , FYI and for anyone with your sarcastic talent .
I am the only survivor my Neuro surgeon know to come out of the deadliest brain tumor for which I was not supposed to see my Daughter 6 th birthday , after some 10 hours under the care of that fabulous neurogeon, I have been able to go back to work , been a productive member of society , paid my taxes and very proud of seeing my Daughter graduating from university {we paid for it too by working 7 days a week and no vacation } not bad for a Man that made his funeral arrangement and signed his organ donations the day before the surgery .
Do you really think I care about my spelling ..........

Well, this zombie actually enjoyed the song. After living in the Mission for 4 years and waking up to men urinating outside my front window...I'm a proud zombie. My guess is the songwriter hasn't turned 30 yet but once he/she does, wants to live in a real community or buy a house, their tune may change.

I love zombies. I love Zombie Bar Crawls, which is why I'm still doing them. October 15th 2011 is the 3rd annual Alameda Zombie Bar Crawl. Search ZC3 on facebook for the event page.
