Alameda Business Spotlight: Alameda Yoga Station

Island yoga studio moves to new location.

Yoga teachers Sandy Blaine and Betsy Weiss co-founded Alameda Yoga Station and ran it together until this year, when Weiss chose to cut back on her responsibilities. Weiss continues as an instructor, teaching the popular Introduction to Yoga classes. Blaine is a faculty member for the Berkeley Yoga Room's Advanced Studies Program, and the author of two books, Yoga For Computer Users and Yoga for Healthy Knees.

On Jan. 1, the studio relocated to 1708 Lincoln Ave.

Owner and teacher: Sandy Blaine

How long has Alameda Yoga Station been in business? We opened in January 1995. This is our third location. Our first, where we offered classes for 12 years, was above Tucker's Ice Cream. Then we moved to our Central Avenue site, where we've been for the past three years.

Why did you relocate? We heard from our Realtor® that this location, which was formerly the Gaslight Emporium, was available. It's centrally located, easier to get to and has better parking. It was a great chance for us to expand. Our old studio was packed when we had 24 students. Here, we can comfortably handle 30-32 students. We really love Alameda and wanted to stay here. We've been dedicated to bringing great yoga classes to the city. We pride ourselves on offering classes where students get individual attention.

How many instructors does Alameda Yoga Station have? From 10 to 12. Our teachers focus on a variety of styles ranging from gentle and restorative yoga to Vinyasa classes, but all of our teachers have a background in the Iyengar style, which is really the basis of good practice, sort of like doing scales in music.

Do you have classes for beginners? We offer a beginner's class four times a year. That's consistently been our most popular class. The January one always sells out by the first week. We're also offering a five-week New Year's Resolution workshop, which is a combination of Pilates and Yoga.

What is the age range of the students? We have kids' yoga (ages 4–8). Some of our teachers accept teenagers in their classes. And grown-ups of all ages participate. We had a student in her 70s in our advanced class last year. With yoga, it is possible to keep your youthful range of motion.

Any other services? We have a massage therapist, Raoul Castro, who is available by appointment five days a week.

Went to a class at the new location and I like it. Very roomy. No mat rage here. It will be nice to go to class and not worry about a parking meter or finding a free space within a mile of class. Congratulations on the new space!
