Updated: Fire at Shorepoint Court Apartment Complex Saturday

At least six units were fully involved, and two people were rescued from the building.

Updated at 7:30 p.m.

Fire damaged eight units in an apartment complex at 901 Shorepoint Court today, with Alameda Fire Department personnel on the scene for several hours in the three-alarm blaze.

At least two and possibly four rescues were initiated in the three-story building, but no injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported, Division Chief Daren Olson said. Eight of the building's 18 units sustained heavy to moderate fire damage, Olson said.

Damage is estimated at $1.5 million, officials said.

About 20 families were displaced by the blaze. The Red Cross was on site to assist the displaced residents.

Deputy City Manager Alex Nguyen said the cause of the fire has not been confirmed.

Fire departments from other cities, including Oakland and Fremont, assisted the AFD.

The fire was visible across the Island late Saturday morning.

An Alameda Police dispatcher said the fire started at the complex in the 900 block of Shorepoint Court. It started on the second floor, she said.

Oakland crews were helping fight the fire near Westline and Shoreline drives, while Alameda County crews were covering Alameda stations, according to an Alameda County Fire Department dispatcher.

The first call about the fire came in to dispatch at 10:59 a.m.

Been listening to it on the Scanner for about an hour and 50 minutes now. Epic stuff, right now the Fire is on the D "Delta" side of the Building and is spreading toward the burnt side on both the Second and Third Floors.

I was told that although the news neglected to report it, a dog died in the fire yesterday. Anyone heard this or can confirm?

Yes, a puppy died. The man had only had it for two weeks. Fire spread to a shared wall in his bedroom, which happened to be where the puppy was.

Wondering if there is a way to help the families affected directly. No doubt the families who lost their homes or belongings could use our help. I know the Red Cross is taking donations but will these go directly to these families.

I am one who has been displaced by this fire. My apartment has no damage as far as I can tell, but I will not be allowed in the building to retrieve my belongings for 3 days. Then an indefinite amount of time before moving back in. I am looking for another rental in order to be settled before I return to work (I'm a teacher) after the New Year. If you would like to help the families who lost so much, or those who are displaced... please contact the rental office. Erin Johnson is the property manager, and she would be the one to connect you to those in need. My personal concern is being able to pay deposits and fees for moving to a new place. I know of a woman named Tina who does nails and is staying in a hotel. She is struggling to pay for that stay and figuring out where to live long-term. Thanks for your concern, and I hope others reach out as well. Many people in this complex have family nearby and the financial means to get through this. The few of us who do not have those are timid about asking for help. There is never a good time to be displaced by a fire, but it is especially difficult during the holidays.

Alameda Firefighters were coordinated and did a terrific job in containing the fire, damage and helping to rescue residents. We were within a block of the complex and saw the whole action.

Rev. Rose, I have a list of households who were permanently displaced by the Shorepoint fire and know that many are struggling to deal with the loss, which is total for all of these units. Total means you got out with nothing but the clothes on your back and are both grateful and scrambling. If you wish to reach the most severely impacted, please contact me at anne@prowell.com.
