Bike Safety for Everyone

Classes available through the East Bay Bicycle Coalition.

Alameda's Bonnie Wehmann is the education director for the East Bay Bicycle Coalition

I spotted her in action in the Fernside on Sunday teaching a class that she had donated to an Edison School fundraiser.

"My friend Whitney won me at the auction and she invited a few other families to come," Wehmann said.

"Even more simply said, it's 'be predictable and be visible,'" explained Wehmann, who teaches bike safety classes across the East Bay. "If people narrow it down to being predictable and being visible that will be their best defense for avoiding crashes."

All East Bay Bicycle Coalition safety teachers are  League of American Cyclists certified, says  Wehmann, and her next class in Alameda will be a Family Cycling Workshop on Sunday, June 26 at Otis Elementary School. The class is for parents and children together.

"Adults are very often surprised that they can learn a thing or two about bicycle safety," she said.

"All these classes are free," Wehman said. "Brought to you by the Alameda County Transit Commission."
