Updated: Child Hit by Car Near Washington Park

The child was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland as a precaution, but his only injury was minor redness to the back of the neck, a police spokesman said Thursday

A child was hit by a car early Wednesday afternoon near Washington Park but received only a minor injury, Alameda police said.

The accident was described as a "slow-speed collision" by Alameda Police Department spokesman Lt. Sean Lynch.

He was taken to Oakland's Children Hospital as a precaution, Lynch said, and to check out a possible bump on his head. On Thursday, Lynch said the boy's only injury was "minor redness to the back of the neck."

"It appears at this time that the child stepped out in front of the car," said Lynch, who said the boy was 7 or 8 years old.

The accident occurred at 12:22 p.m. in the 1300 block of Eighth Street.

According Lynch the boy's father was heading north on Eighth Street when he pulled over to let his son out to go to the park.

"The child exited the car and ran out between his dad's car and the car he parked next to, across both lanes of traffic," said Lynch.

"The driver who struck the boy was going south-bound on Eighth Street," Lynch said.
