Coliseum, City of Oakland Apologize for Noise

City and Coliseum officials issued a joint apology Sunday evening after East Bay residents flooded local police departments with complaints about noise from Saturday night's Beyond Wonderland event

City of Oakland and and Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum officials issued a joint apology Sunday evening for the noise created by Saturday night's Beyond Wonderland music event at the Coliseum, according to a Bay Area News Group article.

In their statement, officials apologized for the "discomfort and inconvenience" to area residents and said they would work with nearby cities in planning future musical events, the article said. BANG also reported that officials said Beyond Wonderland's sound setup was adjusted after a sound check Saturday afternoon but that the changes were not enough to "control the impact" on nearby residents.

Alameda Patch was unable to obtain a copy of the joint statement Sunday.

The event prompted hundreds of phone calls to the Alameda, Oakland and San Leandro police departments from residents disturbed by noise from the event, which ran from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.

In San Leandro, authorities issued an alert issued at 11:26 pm Saturday night saying, "We are getting numerous calls that are overloading are 911 Emergency System. Please call the Oakland Police Department at 510-238-3481. The common complaint is loud base type music."

The Alameda Police Department also referred callers to the Oakland police, according to Patch readers who reached the local department Saturday night. And at OPD, a weary spokesman said Saturday that callers described the the noise as "the loudest it's ever been" for a Coliseum event.

Alameda Patch's initial story on the the event drew well over 200 comments from readers, the majority of them Alameda residents disturbed by the noise, and another 100+ comments on the Alameda Patch Facebook page. While Bay Farm Island and the East End appear to have been hardest hit by the noise, readers said it was also at unpleasant levels near Southshore, in the Gold Coast area and near Webster Street. Readers from San Leandro and San Lorenzo also weighed in with reports.

Typical comments: "The noise is driving me INSANE." "My windows are shaking!" "Sounded like a warzone from WWII." "My 3-year-old is up because of the noise." "I live at least three miles away from the Colisseum and the walls of my home---with the windows shut on a warm night---were literally shaking from the supercharged bass."

Not everyone agreed. Some people who attended the Beyond Wonderland event commented Sunday morning, ncluding one who wrote, "Let us have our fun. Yeah it might have been a little too loud, but one night is nothing to be outraged about."
