Daughter Victim of Hit-and-Run; Mom Wants Answers

A 17-year-old girl was hit by a car at the corner of High Street and Encinal Avenue on Friday, Jan. 20 around 6 p.m.

Dear Editor:

I am hoping you may be able to help me get this story out there.

On Friday, Jan. 20 at about 6 p.m. my 17-year-old daughter was hit
by a car at the intersection of High Street and Encinal Avenue. She is doing well. She spent one night in the hospital as a precaution.

We are looking for anyone who may have seen the accident or heard anything about it. The person that hit her stopped briefly, told her he was going back to his car to get insurance information, and took off.

My daughter described him as a white male with brown hair, possibly in his 30s or 40s, wearing a hat or beanie, and driving what she thought was a dark colored four-door sedan.

We have not been able to locate anyone who may have seen this happen. We really want the person who did this to answer for their actions.

Thank you,
Jennifer Pryor

I am so sorry to hear this, though not too surprised. I have witnessed our neighbor get killed by a driver at our corner of Verdemar and Mecartney. Just yesterday I was crossing the same street and in the first lane of traffic when 2 cars sped by me in the second lane. Drivers are way too dangerous around here. It happens weekly with me. I hope you find the driver. Was there damage to his car so I can be on the lookout for it?

That someone would drive away, & then just pretend that nothing happened, is disgusting. Hope someone saw something, and takes the time to speak up. We all need to be willing to Get Involved.

Thanks for writing, Jennifer. Sorry for your family's scary experience...it helps us all to stay informed. Julie--you actually saw your neighbor die? That must have been a huge shock! I hope you are all taking good care of yourselves.

Please remember to move a bit more slowly and carefully when you are not able to concentrate as well as normally. Let's avoid any additional accidents and injuries!
Best wishes,
Margo Rose

Our elderly neighbor was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries several hours later. Very sad. I agree with the comments posted her. Drivers are driving too fast and are not adhering to the rules of the road,,

I'm so glad to hear your daughter is doing well. My husband was hit a few years ago and I know how stressful this is. I really wish the drivers on this island would slow down and CONSIDER OTHER PEOPLE, you are not the center of the universe. That's been my gripe for years now. Best of luck in your search, take care.

on my daily drive across the island, i encounter many people exceeding our 25 mph limit. speeding tickets would be a great way to remind these people to drive at the posted speed. i also see very SLOW drivers, and people who can not simply maintain the orderly flow of traffic. many of these are texting and talking on phones. again, tickets for these inconsiderates would be a good idea. drivers: leave 5 minutes early, negating the "need for speed" you feel you have. and when you are controlling a dangerous piece of machinery, do NOT allow anything to distract. slow down and simplify your entire life. you just MAY start to enjoy it more and be a better, happier person, enjoying every moment. imagine that...

Same intersection and my son was struck yesterday at 4pm walking home from Otis. Thankfully, he is OK, but I wanted to let the community know what happened. Both kids were crossing at the light at Encinal, walking on High, one of them was struck by a driver turning left onto Encinal. Thankfully, my son was not badly hurt.

His older brother said that "there was an instant swarm of helpful grown ups who stayed with us and helped us" and I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, all of you helpful grown ups out there. We had a trip to ER, an x-ray, and everything is fine.

This is the second pedestrian accident at this intersection in just a short while. I don't know if anything can be done to improve the safety of the intersection, but I think we should all take extra care and caution, as pedestrians and drivers.

I am so sorry to hear that your son was hit, Laura, but am glad to hear he is OK. I did another post asking people to chime in with other dangerous intersections. You can find that here: http://patch.com/A-q12L
