Six Alameda Teens Injured in Morning Accident

A 15-year-old driver sustained life-threatening injuries when a car hit a tree on Island Drive about 1:30 a.m. today, according to the Alameda Police Department.

The driver, who had to be extricated from the car, was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland. The five passengers — four 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old — received non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Highland, Oakland Kaiser and Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for treatment, police said.

All six teens are Alameda residents, police confirmed late this morning.

The car belonged to the parents of one of the passengers and was taken without permission, police said.

The accident occurred in the 800 block of Island Drive, adjacent to the Chuck Corica Golf Complex. Island Drive between Robert Davey Jr. and Maitland Drive remained closed for several hours while police investigated the accident, witnesses said. Police said the closed portion of Island Drive was reopened to traffic by 10:15 a.m.

The APD's major accident investigation team (MAIT) is investigating whether alcohol played a role in the crash, police said.

The APD did not not release the names or home towns of the accident victims this morning. According to some reports, the driver is a boy and the passengers included four girls and one boy.
