Youth Speech Contest at Library April 14

Unity, Through Community is theme of this year's event for high school students

The Season for Nonviolence Student Speech Contest finals will be held April 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the .

The theme of this year’s contest is “Unity, Through Community”.

Alameda  students  in  grades 9 through 12 will be participating in this city-wide speech contest in celebration of the international Season for Nonviolence, which honors the lives and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Cesar Chavez.

Participating schools will select finalists to deliver their speeches at the April 14 contest. The event is open to the public. The library is located at 1550 Oak St.

All participants will receive a certificate of achievement. Cash prizes of $50 through $200 will be awarded.

The contest is co-sponsored by the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth and their Families and and the Alameda Unified School District. The collaborative (ACCYF) serves as an information clearing house, an incubator for innovative ideas and an advocate for families.
