Members from the Humane Society Club at Alameda High comment on their experience at the Alameda Animal Shelter run by FAAS.
“I love playing with the adorable cats and kittens! It definitely feels nice to give back, and it's my New Year's resolution to do more community service. If you love animals and you want to help out around the community, the Alameda Animal Shelter is run mainly by volunteers and really needs the community support.”
“My favorite part about volunteering with the Alameda Animal Shelter is just playing with all the animals. It makes me happy! Volunteering has made me want to spend my time doing something useful instead of what wasting time on the computer or watching television. Friday is my favorite day now because I get to volunteer after school!”

“Volunteering with the Alameda Animal Shelter is a very rewarding experience. Taking two hours to improve these animals’ lives and helping them get closer to finding forever homes always brightens your day. From helping with the general care of the animals or working on socialization with the animals (AKA play time) you’ll always have a good time no matter what. ”

“Volunteering at the shelter has taught me to be more respectful to all living things. I have remembered that planet we live on needs tender love and care for the creatures on it - both animals and humans alike. Running a shelter is a lot of work especially since new staff has only had about a year to get into the daily routine. I volunteer knowing that the people that work as staff cannot devote time to all of the animals that need love and attention.”

“My favorite part about volunteering is just being able to see the animals. The animal shelter is off to the side, and these animals live in kennels... I wouldn't understand how they live if I wasn't volunteering. Seeing them in the shelter makes the rights of animals in general more important to me and I can see what happens when humans don't take care of them. Overall, the shelter has made me more independent. In learning about how to care for these animals, I'm gaining a sense of freedom. Playing with animals really makes time pass by fast. It's a more rewarding and active way to spend free time than anything else. You'll get some exercise in and a boost of happiness, too. I feel very involved when I'm volunteering at the shelter. There's a lovely sense of community.”
