On a sunny weekend in Morgan Hill, the Alameda Riptide came up winless in playoffs and will not be moving on to regionals.
On Saturday, against the nationally ranked Mother Lode (Rio Linda), the Riptide were outmuscled, with several players sent to the sidelines due to injury. This 22-0 loss sent the Riptide to the consolation bracket.
The next day, against local rival Bishop O'Dowd, the girls were unable to secure 3rd place and a possible berth in regionals due to a much-improved O'Dowd team. The Riptide lacked focus and again were beset by injuries and a small bench. Michelle Foketi scored the lone try for Alameda, but it was not nearly enough as Bishop O'Dowd rumbled over the Riptide, 31-5.
The Riptide end the season with a 2-3 league record and a 4-1 non-league record. They are 4th place in Northern California. Leading scorers for the team were Kalila Patete with 67 points, Michelle Foketi with 65, and Caitlin Reid with 45. The team scored 277 points this season, while only allowing 137.
On the boys side, the Islanders will finish off the season with a make-up game against De La Salle's silver team. The boys are hoping to finish a season, that can best be described as underachieving, with a win.
Finally, Alameda Rugby would like to congratulate our local rival, the Oakland Warthogs, for their season that culminated in the Warthogs winning the Northern California championship for Varsity Silver teams.
