Riptide beat Berkeley, lose to Mother Lode
The Alameda Riptide split their two games this weekend, defeating the Berkeley Red Hawks 40-5 in a non-league game on Saturday, then falling to nationally-ranked Mother Lode on Sunday, 10-0.
Against Berkeley, the girls were very successful, with Michelle Foketi scoring 3 tries for 15 points, Da'Nisha "Chocolate" Young-Iatchison scoring 2 tries for 10 points, and Kitty Chan, Kalila Patete, and Samantha Quinones scoring one try each.
Scrumhalf Ashley Hom and Caitlin Reid received the honors of back of the game and forward of the game, respectively.
The Riptide were not as successful the next day, as nationally ranked Mother Lode from Rancho Cordova was able to pull off a 10-0 win.
Though the girls played their hearts out to the last minute, Mother Lode was able to toughen it out, scoring one try each half to go home victorious. Kalila Patete and Michelle Foketi received the honors of back and forward of the game, respectively.
The Riptide face the Elsie Allen Lobos next weekend in Santa Rosa.
Boys get their first win in style
The Alameda Islander boys team notched their first victory of the season in a hard-fought match against national powerhouse San Francisco Golden Gate.
On enemy territory at the previously undefeated SFGG's field on Treasure Island, the boys notched 3 converted tries for a 21-15 victory.
This win was doubly satisfying for the Islanders, as SFGG has several players who defected from Alameda. Thurmond Thomas, Dylan Reedy, and Joshua Brown each scored tries for five points a piece, and Jack Barbour converted each try for six points. The boys finally came together as a team and played lights out from beginning to end, dominating Gate on defense and punishing them with tough tackling and no-holds-barred rucking.
The Alameda boys next play on April 8 at Raimondi Park in West Oakland at 7 p.m., against local rival the Oakland Warthogs.
