CONGRATULATIONS to the Lincoln Middle School Symphonic Band for their SUPERB PERFORMANCE, under the baton of conductor Tyra Ingram Cable, on Friday, April 15, at the California Music Education Association’s State Large Group Festival held at Benicia Middle School in Benicia.
The Lincoln Symphonic Band, comprised of 80 students, performed 3 selections for three judges and received a SUPERIOR and TWO EXCELLENT RATINGS for their performance!
The Lincoln Symphonic Band also participated in a Sight Reading Adjudication, and earned an EXCELLENT RATING!
“Sight Reading” consists of a judge giving the Director and student musicians a piece of music they have not seen before, and obviously have not studied or practiced before. The Director is given a very short time to study the piece, and then verbally instructs the students on how to perform that piece of music. No practice or rehearsal is allowed. The student musicians then perform that music “cold” only one time and are graded on that single performance.
“Sight Reading” tests the Director’s ability to teach, the students’ ability to pay attention and follow instruction, and the joint effort of the teacher directing and students performing the music. The judge then critiques the performance and announces the rating. The entire “sight reading” process takes place in a time frame of about 20 minutes.
A special “THANK YOU” to the many Lincoln parents who assisted on this music field trip.
The 80 members of the Lincoln Middle School Symphonic Band performed a very extensive and impressive selection of band literature pieces for the CMEA Festival: Chimes of Liberty March by Edwin Franko Goldman, arranged by Calvin Custer; Canadian Nightwinds by Stanley H. Purvis and Covington Square by James Swearingen.
The Lincoln Band will continue work on this repertoire for their Grand Finale Concert in Kofman Auditorium on May 11 and their annual Tour to Anaheim on June 1 where the Lincoln Marching Band has been selected to lead the prestigious Main Street Parade at Disneyland on Friday, June 3!
