Abandoned on Animal Hospital's Doorstep, Captain Crunch Needs Permanent Home

The black cat with the big amber eyes — starving and infested by fleas when he was abandoned last month— was treated by the staff at Park Centre Animal Hospital. The hospital wants to find him a "forever home."

Just a month ago, Captain Crunch was really down on his luck.

Early on a December morning, a woman left him in a box on the doorstep of Park Centre Animal Hospital, 2501 Central Ave., Alameda. The woman was captured on surveillance video but has not been identified.

When the hospital's receptionists arrived, they found "a very sick cat," according to Park Centre's Facebook page. He was dehydrated, emaciated and suffering from a flea infestation and mange.

Now Captain Crunch — the latest of several names tried out by hospital staff — is healthy, neutered and looking for a permanent home. He's been treated by Park Centre's veterinarians and is, for the moment, living in one of the hospital's cat condos.

Hospital manager Steve Busse said Park Centre opted to keep Captain Crunch at the hospital after his recovery because the Alameda Animal Shelter "is really full right now."

Busse said the hospital has treated and found homes for abandoned pets before, often animals that had been injured and brought to Park Centre by the Alameda Police Department.

He said Captain Crunch is about seven months old and "very sweet."

Busse said anyone interested in adopting the cat should call Park Centre at (510) 521-1700. The hospital does not charge an adoption fee, he said.
