By Hank Leeper, Executive Director of the Alameda Food Bank -
The Alameda Food Bank, which exclusively serves residents of the City of Alameda, is issuing an urgent call to the community for 1,000 turkeys and hams, and the fixings to go with them to be distributed this holiday season to the families it serves.
Each year in November and December the Alameda Food Bank distributes turkeys, hams and bags of special holiday food items to its clients, relying upon the generosity of local residents and businesses for their donations.
Besides turkeys and hams, the Food Bank is seeking boxed stuffing mix, canned black olives, canned gravy, cake mix, corn bread muffin mix, instant potatoes, canned yams and condensed milk.
Businesses or groups making large donations can contact the Alameda Food Bank to arrange to have those donations picked up by calling 510-523-5850.
Others can drop off donations at the food bank's office which is located at 1900 Thau Way, Alameda (Constitution Ave at Atlantic Ave.) during open hours only.
Holiday season hours to drop off donations are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesdays from 11:00 am to 6:30 p.m. and the second and third Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Please note the Alameda Food Bank will be closed Nov. 24 through 26, December 24 through 26 and Dec. 31 through Jan. 2.
Monetary contributions can be made at the Alameda Food Bank during business hours or can be mailed to P.O. Box 2167, Alameda, CA 94501.
Over the last several years the Alameda Food Bank has seen a surge in the number of people it serves. Today, nearly 1 in 13 Alameda households receive assistance.
We thank the people of Alameda for their ongoing generosity. Without it we would not be able to serve our neighbors in need.
