Alameda Hosts East Bay Harvey Milk Day Celebration Tonight

Festivities kick off with a buffet at 5:30 p.m. Program begins at 6 p.m. at Encinal High School.

From the Alameda Harvey Milk Day Committee

Keeping Harvey’s Hope Alive will be the focus of this year’s 4th Annual Harvey Milk Day celebration as Alameda welcomes keynote speaker Anne Kronenberg and the return of the East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus for another rousing performance.

Alameda is one of two East Bay cities to celebrate Harvey Milk Day and the only city in Alameda Country to do so.

Anne Kronenberg is the co-founder and co-chair of the Harvey Milk Foundation and a true living legend of the LGBT movement. She was Harvey’s campaign manager for his successful ground breaking election to public office, served as his primary political aide in City hall and was Harvey’s close personal friend during his years in San Francisco.

The event will feature a moving presentation by student Hunter DeVecchi, one of the winners of the Season of Nonviolence essay contest, a reading of the Harvey Milk Day Story by children from Alameda’s elementary schools, and the announcement of the winners of the Alameda Harvey Milk Day Poetry and Poster contest.

City Council and A.U.S.D. officials will be on hand to present the City of Alameda and A.U.S.D. Harvey Milk Day Proclamations and Rev. Laura Rose will be speaking and recognizing leaders and members of Welcoming and Inclusive Congregations in attendance.

All are invited and children and youth are encouraged to attend. A Kids Zone with art projects and activities for children age 3 and over will be available throughout the event. There will information tables and American Sign Language interpretation and the school is fully accessible.

Sponsors of the celebration include the Alameda Unified School District and the Alameda Harvey Milk Day Committee. For a full list of co-sponsors and financial sponsors please see the attached flyer.

Encinal High School is located at 210 Central Avenue in Alameda and can be reached by AC Transit bus lines 31 (Pacific and Main Street), 20 (Central and Webster) or by car from the Webster/Posey Street Tube (1.82 miles) and I 880.
