Free Children’s Life Jackets at Alameda South Shore this Friday

The California Department of Boating and Waterways is sponsoring a children's life jacket giveaway event at South Shore Shopping Center (center fountain court) from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, May 24.

From Alameda South Shore Center

Did you know that California law says all children under 13 must wear a properly fitted life jacket at all times while aboard most recreational boats?

To help boat owners and parents comply, the California Department of Boating and Waterways is sponsoring a children’s life jacket giveaway event at South Shore Shopping Center (center fountain court) from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, May 24.

If you are a boater (or a frequent guest on a boat) and your child has worn out or outgrown his or her life jacket, you can replace it for free. Even if you don’t have one to turn in, you can get one — again for free.

Please bring your child.

Skilled and knowledgeable volunteers from the U.S. Power Squadrons and Coast Guard Auxiliary will assure that the new life jacket is the correct size and properly adjusted.

Be sure to know your child’s weight — life jackets are “sized” by weight. No tax dollars were used to bring these life jackets to Alameda families — they were bought with generous support from Radio Disney.

Radio Disney dancers and DJ will entertain families during the event. Volunteer coordinator Luther Abel of the U.S. Power Squadrons said, “Quantities are limited so come early.

Last year we quickly ran out of the most popular sizes.” Come to South Shore on Friday and start your summer boating season safely.
