Ice Rink Skates Into South Shore Center

The Little Ice Rink will be set up at South Shore Center this year from Nov. 16 through January 21, 2013.

From Alameda South Shore Center

Alameda South Shore Center owner Jamestown, is pleased to announce that The Little Ice Rink is coming to South Shore Center this year, opening Nov. 16 and continuing through January 21, 2013.

The rink first opened in downtown Alameda in 2011, a gift to the community from Alameda’s Perforce Software Foundation. It is once again being generously supported by the foundation, along with additional sponsors Executive Inn & Suites Embarcadero Cove, Bayside Hotel Oakland and Bank of Alameda.

“We are pleased to offer a home to what has quickly become a local treasure, and invite everyone to come skate at the beach,” said Jamestown COO Michael Phillips. “The rink, along with our Santa House and Winter Wonderland, will be the site of many community-focused holiday activities this year.”

Located on Park Street at Franciscan Way, and adjacent to Petco, the 3,000-square-foot rink offers fun for the whole family. The public is invited to enjoy the grand opening celebration with 25 percent off the cost of skating all day on Nov. 16.

Stay tuned for future guest appearances by local dignitaries and skating celebrities, including Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano.

The rink will be open seven days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Little Ice Rink is produced and operated by Ice-America, a provider of permanent and seasonal ice rinks supported by industry-leading technology and event production expertise.

Santa Takes to the Ice!

Santa takes to the ice at 2 p.m. on Black Friday, Nov. 23, before heading to the Santa House, where he will be available for photos with children, families and even pets!

Photos will take place in the courtyard adjacent to Daiso and Kohl’s, Nov. 23 through Dec. 24, with photo ops for pets on Dec. 6 and 13. Visit www.alamedasouthshorecenter.com/events for the full schedule.

This year, the Santa House will feature a Candy Shop, offering everyone’s favorite treats, from candy canes to fresh fudge. A purchase receipt from the Candy Shop will entitle Little Ice Rink skaters to a sweet deal — a 20 percent discount! Peter’s Kettle Corn will also be on site serving delicious, freshly-popped kettle corn.

Fun! I'm also glad that Santa won't be here until the end of November. I was at Stoneridge mall last weekend and Santa was already there.

Will Off the Grid still be there on Saturdays?
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) November 8, 2012 at 02:24 pm
I've been told that Off the Grid will continue in the same location on Saturdays— but around the rink itself. Sounds like it'll make for some fun Saturdays there!

Is it real ice, or the plastic "ice" we've seen at City Hall in past years?
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) November 8, 2012 at 06:17 pm
David, a few folks have asked that. Didn't know there was a difference until now (then again, I've never really been ice skating before). I'll find out for you.

David, I was told it'll be real ice.

I think the plastic ice rink will be on Park St somewhere.

Please be very very careful at the South Shore ice rink if the ice has a layer of water on it. Yesterday I was there and in less than 40 minutes saw 3 people get hurt when they fell. In each case the skaters had their skates slip out in front of them. One girl fell and hit the back of her head on the ice. Two boys fell and hit their heads. The boys both turned as they fell to try to avoid landing on their backs - one ended up with a purple big bump on his forehead, the other hit his mouth and had a bloody lip.
I never saw this before when we went to this last year. The staff said it was because of the layer of water.

Woke me from a dead sleep. Sounded like 6 or 9 gun shots north of Melrose on Maitland DR.

APD said they found no evidence of gun shots and suspect fireworks.Read More http://www.action-alameda-news.com/2013/06/09/fourth-of-july-public-service-announcement/

When they build that high density development on the Harbor Bay Club site with 25% low incomeRead More housing requirement, Bay Farm will be hearing a lot more gun shots at night.

So sad to see. Did you report this to East Bay Regional Park District? I provided the number in yourRead More last posting.
Lorraine Sarullo June 12, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Yes, I reported it to the EBRP staff who happened to be nearby at the beach. I also reported it toRead More the warden of Fish and Wildlife in Sacramento and the warden of the local territory. The local warden told me yesterday that he will be patrolling the area, but I did not get to speak to him today (only left both wardens a voicemail message).

Nice, thanks for the update, and sharing these posts with us, Lorraine. If it is a person behind allRead More of this, hopefully he/she will get caught soon.

Anonymous tip to the fire department?
quietneeded June 12, 2013 at 04:17 pm
Leaving a note to them is a bad idea if it really is a illegal operation. So many ways that can goRead More wrong. Just call the police dept. Leave a tip. Simple and safe.
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) June 13, 2013 at 09:03 am
Agree with Carol. Perhaps an anonymous tip to Alameda Fire or Alameda Police.

Given the targeted harvesting of parts, this is not a "times are hard and food is scarce"Read More issue. It's greedy, ignorant, and yes it's disgusting and disrespectful to nature. http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/extinction-countdown/2012/01/17/manta-rays-endangered-by-sudden-demand-from-chinese-medicine/
Lorraine Sarullo June 11, 2013 at 04:13 pm
Thank you both (Nay and Analisa) for the information. Maybe I got the name of the park serviceRead More mixed up. It was the beach area around Grand St.

I contacted Crown Beach (part of the EBRP). They checked into the matter with Fish and WildlifeRead More (previously Fish and Game), to see if there was any wrongdoing. On the surface of things, it seems the wings (fins) are the edible part of the ray. And apparently, the way regulations are written it may not be even be considered littering! So, however inhumane, disrespectful, selfish, gruesome it may seem, there may not have been any fishing laws broken. Although, when I spoke with the warden of Fish and Wildlife he said he will be looking into the matter. To voice your opinion and propose changes to regulation, you can write a letter to and attend a Fish and Game Commission town hall meeting here is the link: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/contact/ and http://www.fgc.ca.gov/meetings/2013/index.aspx I plan on writing to suggest regulation against polluting public beaches with unused portions of the catch from fishing and also ask for recommendations on limiting the catch on fish that only have small percentage of edible parts (such as the rays). I would welcome any help in a letter writing campaign, the contact information is listed on the link provided above. Many Thanks.
