A baby dolphin was born a week early at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo Thursday.

Bella, a 9-year-old bottlenose dolphin, gave birth to her first calf on Thursday, a week before she was due, park officials said.

The sex has yet to be determined for the calf, which is being observed and monitored as Bella shows it her maternal side.

However, park staff said the baby is believed to be female, which would make it the first female born at the park in more than eight years.

The first 30 days are critical for the health of the calf, which Bella carried as a fetus for 12 months, park officials said.

Discovery Kingdom will soon announce when the calf will be available for the public to view.

Keeping dolphins, orcas and other marine mammals in captivity is cruel and inhumane. Please do not support it by visiting Marineworld. http://www.wspa-usa.org/latestnews/2009/Reportexposessufferingatwhaledolphinattractions.aspx

I feel speedy for this baby dolphin being born in an unnatural environment. I no longer support marine mammals being held in captivity either. It's just sad and wrong that these animals are bred and held hostage for the sake of a profit hidden behind marketing schemes that say its for the benefit of the publics knowledge. They are used as money makers plain and simple.
