Released by Alameda Municipal Power:
Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) is warning customers of a telephone scam targeting businesses in Alameda.
AMP has received several complaints from local businesses that someone impersonating a utility representative is claiming their electric accounts are past due and will be disconnected. The caller goes on to provide payment instructions via credit card or Green Dot MoneyPaks.
If you receive a call demanding immediate payment on your account, be suspicious. AMP will never ask for credit card numbers or wire transfers, and only provides courtesy calls to accounts that are already delinquent.
If you have any doubts, don’t give out any information. Please hang up and call AMP Customer Service Representatives at 748-3900. AMP also maintains an automated system that enables you to check your balance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If you suspect you have become a victim of this scam, AMP recommends that you immediately call your credit card company to cancel your card and call Alameda Police Department to file a report. Alameda Police can be reached at 337-8340. Most recently, the scam did not involve residential customers.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe:
- AMP employees always carry photo identification cards. If the ID is not visible and you don’t see any other AMP logo, ask the individual to show you his or her badge.
- All AMP vehicles are marked with the AMP name and logo. If you are approached by someone claiming to be from AMP, check to see if his or her vehicle is clearly marked and/or ask for ID.
- Verification is easy. If you have any doubts or concerns that a visitor or caller represents AMP, call AMP at 748-3900 to check on the individual and his or her task.
- Never provide unsolicited callers or visitors with credit card numbers or any other information that may compromise your financial security.
