T-shirt League to ‘Play Ball’ Once Again in Alameda

Thanks to one “true-blue” baseball fan and the Alameda Recreation and Park Department, one island favorite is destined to take the field again.

Alameda’s City Auditor Kevin Kearney and the city of Alameda are working to resurrect the city’s “T-shirt League,” which ended in the 1990s, but provided the game of baseball – and instilled the values and love of sports that come with it – into hundreds of youth over the years.

The department is planning to field teams at a half-dozen parks next summer and currently is running a T-shirt contest on Facebook to generate interest in the league’s revival, reports The Alamedan.

Kearney reportedly will be working to raise the $7,500 needed to buy equipment for the league. The T-shirt contest continues through August – the three shirts that receive the most votes will be printed up and sold at the department’s pending “Everything Alameda” event, which is scheduled for Sept. 28.
