What's Open, What's Closed on Columbus Day

Schools and federal offices closed, no mail delivery.

Monday, Oct. 14, is the 2013 date for the holiday traditionally celebrated as Columbus Day, although now sometimes referred to as "Fall Holiday" or "Indigenous People's Day" in some communities.

Columbus Day marks the anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas, which happened on Oct. 12, 1492.

Here's a look at what will be open and closed in Alameda and nearby.

Open:

State, Alameda County and Alameda city offices (and Oakland city offices), most businesses.

Closed:

Alameda public schools and school district offices, Alameda County Superior Court, banks.

It's a holiday for the United States Postal Service so there will be no mail service on Monday. Since this is a federal holiday, federal agencies that haven't already been closed by the government shutdown will be closed.
