Local meetup keeps events free or low-cost for members.

The Alameda Oakland Berkeley Digital Photography meetup group, which attracts all levels of photographers, has been garnering positive reviews.

Formed in mid-2010, it now boasts 400 members. The group is for anyone interested in learning more about taking and processing digital images, working with models, lighting, and other aspects of photography.

On Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. the meetup will launch a series of camera walks. The first will be around Oakland's Lake Merritt. It will last approximately an hour and involve three miles of walking. The group will stop for refreshments on Grand Avenue afterwards.

A studio and flash photography workshop will be held on Feb. 28 from 12 to 4 p.m. This introductory class costs $25 per person.

Space is limited at the group's events, but it maintains wait lists and repeats popular activities.

Graham Bird has served as the facilitator of the group since last summer. He is a photographer based in the Jingletown neighborhood of Oakland, a thriving arts community just on the other side of the Park Street Bridge.

The meetup group also has a message board with members suggesting photography activities and classes.

Some of its past meetups have included photographing the San Francisco Carnaval Parade and completing individual assignments and sharing photos with fellow members for feedback.
