AEF Highlights Student Achievement around the Island

Bill shares some inspiring student success stories.

My oldest daughter started kindergarten in 1977, which means I have 35 years of being involved in Alameda public schools as both a parent and an educator. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know thousands of students over these many years. I’ve seen former students grow up, get jobs, even have students of their own! So many of our current students are doing amazing things as well. These students make me so proud and their stories deserve to be shared. After all, students are what it’s all about.

So, I’d like to share some of these wonderful student stories that hear on a regular basis via this blog. I know there are many more stories out there, so I invite you to share as well by writing about student stories you know in the comments section below.

Jet goes Crimson. A big congratulations to Elaine Spencer, Encinal High School (EHS) class of 2012, for being accepted to HARVARD UNIVERSITY! Harvard accepts only about 6 percent of applicants, so this is an outstanding accomplishment. However, this might be becoming a Jet tradition as 2008 EHS grad Ian Merrifield also attends the Crimson. Congratulations Elaine!

The real NCS winners. And on the other side of the Island, congratulations to Alameda High’s cross country teams. Both the boys and girls teams placed well in North Coast Section (2nd and 7th, respectively). Even better, both teams won the NCS Scholastic Team Award for Division II. In fact, the girls team, with a 3.84 GPA, was the best of any team in the NCS, boys or girls! The boys average GPA was 3.68.

Not to be outdone by the landlubbers, Alameda’s girls water polo team also won the NCS Scholastic Team Award with a 3.65 GPA, which was the highest out of 165 NCS teams!

Lincoln Middle School breaks walls.  And it's a good thing. Check out this powerful anti-bullying video made by students Lincoln's Wall Breakers project.

I’ll share more student success stories next month. But in the meantime, if you know of an accomplishment by an Alameda public school student — either current or former — please share via the comments section. Let’s get the word out about our amazing Alameda students!
