I hope by now you’ve heard about the best party in town, All Together Now, on Thursday, Nov. 10, 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Alameda Theatre. You’ll be dancing in the aisles to popular Beatles tribute band, The Sun Kings. A highlight will be when Alameda student musicians join The Sun Kings to play Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band in its entirety. Warm up to DJ Pete Fletcher’s Hand Picked Oldies show featuring special guests, nationally acclaimed a capella group Talk of the Town (featuring AUSD’s own Andrew Lockwood!), and an award winning performance by Dance/10.
What I’d like to talk to you about today, however, is the cause as it is one near and dear to my heart: arts education in our schools. All profits from All Together Now will be distributed directly to music, art and drama programs in Alameda public schools. While Alameda schools have done an excellent job of retaining arts programming in the face of severe funding shortages, community support for these programs provides the wind beneath the sails. No amount of talent or dedication can make up for a shortage of musical instruments, a lack of art supplies, or take a theatre production from a script to the stage. Your support of All Together Now helps provide the resources necessary for these programs to succeed and for students to soar.
The importance of arts education can’t be overstated. Visual and performing arts are a core component of a well-rounded education. The arts are the languages we all speak, no matter our individual differences. Experiencing and creating works of art benefits students in their intellectual, personal, and social development and there is a strong relationship between learning in the arts and academic achievement. And, as Albert Einstein once said, while “logic will get you from A to B, imagination will take you anywhere.”
Nov. 10 is truly an All Together Now event as many local restaurants, vintners and breweries have joined the effort by providing a wide variety of delicious food, wines and brews. AEF has been fortunate enough to work with The Alameda Association of REALTORS® on this evening and they have lined up several wonderful silent auction items including a week’s stay in Maui, a cabin vacation in Lake Tahoe and a flight over the Bay. In addition there’ll be a couple of fun raffles including the chance to win a Scooter for as little as twenty dollars.
So, I hope you’ll join us. It’ll be a great party and you’ll be helping to keep the arts alive for thousands of Alameda students at the same time.
Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 the day of the event. Advance tickets include one drink ticket. Tickets can be purchased from our web site or at the following locations: Daisy’s, Color Me Mine, Lilac Boutique, 1400 Bar and Grill, Harbor Bay Realty, Kane and Associates, Gallagher and Lindsey.
