Books, Inc., is an oasis of culture in Alameda Island. Books, Inc., provides an intelligent selection of books, including books on history, politics, travel, art, and photography. This is not the best store to shop for dime-store romance novels or murder mysteries. As is the case with the venerable Black Oak Books, located up the road a bit in Berkeley, Books, Inc., provides monthly readings by authors. Books, Inc., provides an alcove that is devoted to children's books, and it is the case that kids who are ten and under, make a beeline for this part of Books, Inc., as soon as they enter the door. Books, Inc., also includes has a magazine rack, with a generous selection of magazines. These magazines are made of real paper! In other words, they are not on-line magazines, which require electricity, and which are subjected to the chronic problem of battery failure. Paper magazines, and paper books, have the advantage that they can be easily read in the bathtub, on inflatable rafts, in rowboats, and under conditions of nuclear attack when radiation prevents the proper functioning of all electronic devices.
