Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to Congress and the first major-party black candidate for President of the United States.  The daughter of immigrants, she grew up in Barbados and Brooklyn, N.Y.  Educator, author and politician, Shirley Chisholm said she ran for President "in spite of hopeless odds...to demonstrate the sheer will and refusal to accept the status quo."
