"Tea & Justice" Film Event with Filmmaker Ermena Vinluan

     A screening of the award-winning documentary Tea & Justice will take place, followed by a discussion with Filipina Producer/Director Ermena Vinluan. Vinluan is an AlamedaHigh School graduate currently living in New York City where she continues making films.

    Co-sponsors of this film event are the Alameda Committee to Celebrate Filipino American History Month, Alameda Multicultural Community Center, Filipino Advocates for Justice, American Center for the Philippine Arts and San Francisco Filipino American Jazz Festival.  Desserts will be provided by Sampanguita International Cuisine.

     Tea & Justice chronicles the careers of the first Asian-American women to become officers of the New York Police Department. Immigrants Agnes Chang, Christine Leung and Trish Ormsby, defied stereotypes and changed law enforcement in their city. Tea & Justice was named “Best Domestic Documentary” and Vinluan was honored for her “Outstanding Contributions to Filmmaking” at the 2007 Queens International Film Festival. Vinluan was also one of ten recipients of the Women in Film Foundation/General Motors Film Finishing Fund. Tea & Justice was awarded an“Art & Activism” grant from the Asian Women Giving Circle.

     An artifact with a 100-year timeline of Filipinos in U.S. History will be available for review during this event. The artifact begins with the end of the Spanish American War and the ensuing Philippine American War.

     Everyone is welcome.  The venue is wheelchair accessible and near bus lines 20, 21 & 51A.
