Best Hospitals: John Muir Medical Center Ranks Near The Top In California

Alta Bates, Alameda Hospital are left off the list

John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek has once again earned high honors in U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings of hospitals across the nation.

The medical facility on Ygnacio Valley Road was ranked as the seventh best hospital in California by the magazine. It was also listed as the second best hospital in the Bay Area.

John Muir Medical was ranked in the top 40 nationally in gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology and orthopedics.

Other hospitals in the region were not on the magazine's national or state list. Those omitted include Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley, Children's Hospital in Oakland, Kaiser Permanente in Oakland and Alameda Hospital in Alameda.

U.C. San Francisco Medical Center received top honors in the Bay Area. It also tied for the No. 7 spot on the national list with New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, N.Y.

UCSF Medical Center also ranked No. 2 among California hospitals, a rating it shared with Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto. UCLA Medical Center was ranked number one.

The rankings, now in their 24th year, cover nearly 5,000 medical centers across the country and span 16 medical specialties, from cancer to neurology and neurosurgery.

Hospitals that rank near the top of at least six specialties earn a spot on the Honor Roll. Only 18 distinguished hospitals made this year's list, with UCSF Medical Center among that elite group, the Huffington Post reported.
