Walking past Dan's Fresh Produce on another errand this weekend, heaps of apples glinting in the afternoon sunshine caught my eye. I stopped in to ask what else is at its best this time of year.
A clerk recommended the satsumas, which are small, seedless mandarin oranges that are especially easy to peel. "Get the ones with leaves," he said. "Delicious!"
Also available right now — organic pummelos, ancestors of today's grapefruit. Native to Southest Asia and Malaysia, pummelos "grow wild on river banks in the Fiji and Friendly Islands," according to a report from Purdue University. They taste like non-acidic grapefruit but take a bit of special preparation. See the attached video for instructions on how to peel pummelos.
Several varieties of apples and potatoes are also in good supply right now.
