Debbie George, owner of the Park Street Plaza shares the latest news going on at the building and businesses located at 1419 Park St. She also takes into consideration readers' suggestions on business marketing after the closure of The Cupcake Shop

By Debbie George

I am the owner of "The Park Street Plaza" building at 1419 Park St. We purchased this building in 1996 when our former location in the 1300 block of Park Street was renovated.

Prior to the move, we owned and operated our full-line furniture and mattress store for 23 years at 1342 Park St. We have now 17 "additional" years under our belt (at 1419 Park St.) for being a successful business owner now for a total of 40 years.

But to sum things up, our career has seen better days, and as we discovered, the beautiful property we own would be better served if we made the property our new career.

This is what has been going on for the past five years. Never did we anticipate the change to take so long but through the days of transition many changes occurred and the goal was to put together a shopping plaza that would benefit not only new business opportunity and raise sales tax dollars for our city, but job creation for local residents.

With a 10,000 sq. ft. building in the heart of our historic downtown, it was important to us now as landlords, to put together the best mix for our tenants that could all benefit from each other.

We have the experience of being a tenant, retailer and landlord. What is most important to us now is the success of our tenants and bringing something to Alameda that the community will be proud of and enjoy.

I do welcome and pay attention to suggestions and ideas from the community, hence why I am thanking you for addressing the issue of business closures and giving me the segue into the opening of The Park Street Plaza.

There are currently two businesses operating today within the building and six additional businesses to be open by Fall. The front of the building was one of the last in Alameda to benefit from the now-gone Facade Grant Program which was completed last year.

As the renovation is still underway and the tenants are working on their openings, Alameda Patch readers are right in mentioning about no advertising and identifying business that's inside the plaza.

We are in the process of all new signage and I can't tell you how anxious we all are to let everyone know about us, but until the tenants are ready, we continue our work.

The Park Street Spring Festival held Mother's Day weekend will be the beginning of our announcements, and let me tell you, that can't come soon enough. If you would like to see some of the renovations, just look at Park Street Plaza on Facebook.

We are also marketing the units that are still available through SpotMojo on the Patch.

As I am busting at the seams with the anticipation of this project being complete and will take into consideration the comments from readers.

Sorry to say, and as readers mentioned, they were not prepared to open a second location at this time.

If you need any information from me I am at The Plaza everyday except Mondays.
