Poll: Your Favorite Alameda Sandwich Spot

Where do you like to go?

I am not a particularly experienced sandwich-eater (we all have flaws), so I turned to all y'all on Facebook for suggestions for this poll. Turns out there are many highly regarded sandwich shops out there.

While at first I intended to include only four or five, it seems that, given the wealth of choices we have here on the Island, that would be wrong.

So where do you like to go for sandwiches, Alameda?

Vote for your favorite in the poll below. You can also click on the links to the businesses on the list and rate them in Patch Places, our business directory. You can also write reviews. (And, if I've somehow managed to leave out your favorite place, feel free to launch a write-in campaign in the comments.) Please vote only once.

Your suggestions for favorite sandwich place (in reverse alphabetical order):

, Subway (, , , ),  , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NOTE: Because this poll is not scientific, the vote count is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor, based on poll results, comments and reviews on Patch Places.

I do recognize that choosing one favorite sandwich shop may be asking too much, so feel free to cast another "vote" in the comments.

The poll closes 9 a.m. Friday.

If you have never tried the sandwiches at Island City Cafe, you're missing out on not only the tastiest freshest ingredients in the East Bay area, you're also missing out on meeting some of the nicest people, as well! Ken and Peggy the owners are almost always there and make it a point to smile and greet every customer. My family loves Wednesday family movie night! Popcorn and a drink for the kids, and ice cold adult beverage for the adults. What could be better then that?

Oh dear! Readers point out that I left Jay's off the list. Let the write-in campaign begin. You can post your review of Jay's here: http://patch.com/L-cNxf -Eve

Choices, choices, choices... unlike Eve, I am a very "experienced" sandwich eater so find it impossible to pick my favorite from the list of many exceptional eateries she's listed. Aren't we lucky to have so many great places for this kind of fare in Alameda that are independently owned and not cookie-cutter chains? If you're going to include Subway, however, I think you should also include the Safeway deli counters which make a pretty good made to order to-go sandwich. Also not included was Maitland Market Cafe and Deli on Bay Farm. Isn't there a sandwich cafe actually on Alameda Point? Seems like I went to one there for coffee one morning and meant to get back and try their lunch menu. If anyone knows about that one, do report.

Twitter link went to wrong page, FYI, Eve.

The Island City Cafe has wonderful sandwiches and friendly helpful service. I am so glad I tried it.
Jon Spangler February 27, 2012 at 03:16 pm
I'm happy with the sandwiches at several places on the list and had to almost randomly choose one from the list. I, too, liked the turkey sandwich I got from the Maitland Market: it's a friendly local spot. I also like Johnathan's (right next to my most-favorite Alameda establishment, Stone's Cyclery), Blue Dot, Little House, Jim's, High Street Station, Cafe Central, and others. I love lots of the places on the list (like Wescafe) but have never had a sandwich there.
And what about burritos? I think they are a nutritional equivalent to sandwiches and would choose El Caballo Wraps for a tasty pollo asado burrito for lunch over any turkey sandwich in town--no matter how good that sandwich is....
Charlie Howell February 27, 2012 at 04:08 pm
Like Jon there are several places I frequent for a sandwich fix. I favor Dominico's for their convenient location and homey feeling of all the family members working there.
El Caballo makes a wonderful torta which is a Mexican sandwich, and my bride picks up a great and cheep pulled pork sandwich from Rooster's Road House after she get her locks tended to over at Spank.

I love going to Why Cook located in the Harbor Bay business park.

My favorite sandwich (and burger) place is Scolari's on Park street, they also have the best french fries.

I love learning about the best sandwich places! My husband is a vegetarian and loves sandwiches---He is a pescatarian so fish sandwiches work. I love looking at your descriptions and will start trying the list of suggestions!

WHERE IS THAT PHOTO FROM? Looks AMAZING!
gwen February 27, 2012 at 09:13 pm
I'm pretty sure that one's from Santoro's, they use Boar's Head.

Hands down, my three favorite sandwich haunts in town are:
LIttle House Cafe, Wescafe, and Blue Dot Cafe. Most creative daily specials and menu choices is Little House. I especially love the outdoor atmosphere and offered by Little House and Wescafe.

Island City Cafe is great! Missing from the list is the Waterfront Deli, a true gem hidden away on Marina Village Parkway. They serve great sandwiches and have an expansive patio overlooking the marina.
Patricia Finnegan February 27, 2012 at 10:56 pm
Scolari's Good Eats, hands down, because it is the product of an independent creative chef who we're lucky to have residing locally. The food there is on the level of the small cafés I've frequented in Manhattan.
Because we're offered another "vote" here in the comments, I also want to give a shout-out to the cuisine of Little House, which is always innovative and tasty, with a high level of quality in their ingredients. Ok, now I'm really hungry!

If you haven't tried the parm sandwiches (meatball, eggplant, chicken) at Abigail Cafe, you haven't met Alameda's best sandwich. But agreed about Scolari's -- overall, it's on a whole new level.
Tom Brody February 28, 2012 at 12:01 am
Abigail serves Moroccan cuisine, including sandwiches. When I go to Abigail, I take my family, or I take my mom, or I take my family and my mom. There is plenty of parking, since Abigail Cafe is located next to a parking lot (it is free). Usually, I order eggplant, since that is the food that is most different from what I normally might have. I like the caramelized onions that come with the eggplant. Plus, there is an excellent cappuccino machine, that is used for making various coffees and hot chocolate. The two proprieters are friendly, and they are servers too. They have good eye contact, and treat you as though you are guests at their own home. The view is especially unique. One can dine outside on the front patio, and watch the sun poking through the clouds over San Francisco, or admire the Navy ships at the nearby Alameda shipyard. One can also watch the continous performance of the ground squirrels, romping on the meadow directly across the street from Abigail Cafe. Inside, there are two tables by the front window, where one can watch the circus of squirrels and yellow birds.

Dave Lang February 28, 2012 at 08:04 pm
Scolari's sandwiches are good, but we continue to read in area newspapers and websites that people are unhappy they're still making sandwiches, pizza, etc early in the morning and then putting said food in the unrefrigerated window where it sits all day. Mayo, cheese, meat, etc are all spoiling besides the cross-contamination additional problems documented there. No one wants to potentially risk their health eating spoiled food just because it's convenient for the manager. When any of us have asked him about it, he's become uppity as if we have no right to challenge him on this health problem. Sure we do-refuse eating there until they change their assembly-line mentality.
Milt Lang February 28, 2012 at 08:08 pm
Cybelle, Why Cook has been closed for 15 months(as sadly have many of the former businesses in the neglected Harbor Bay Isle "shopping center." The rumors out there are that hopefully the owner/manager who are reportedly out of state will finally be selling it. They let it get run down and the diminishment of it has been well documented in Alameda's Sun and Journal.

My favorite sandwich is the Turkey Salad Sandwich at Harbor Bay Club Cafe made by Lorena. I will even go there on my day off!!
HappyAlamedan February 29, 2012 at 07:24 pm
Wendy, try The Little House Cafe - they have an amazing array of vegetarian sandwiches (and entrees)! My son and I shared a ricotta, spinach and roasted pumpkin sandwich on toasted sourdough the other day.
Taryn Bradley March 3, 2012 at 05:50 am
I have to say that my absolute favorite sandwich place is Santoro's. Not only is everything fresh, but you won't find nicer and friendlier owners than Mike and Heidi. You feel like family after your first sandwich! They can do vegetarian also. That's the only place I go now for fresh, yummy and hearty sandwiches!
Terry March 4, 2012 at 01:07 am
Hello, I'd love to hear more about this proposed sale of Harbor Bay Landing. Any links to news, please post? It is sadly run down and has so much potential!
Johanna Hall March 11, 2012 at 01:24 pm
I was so enamored by the creative flavors of "The Naturalist" panini at Little House Cafe, I can't help but recommend it to vegetarians as well as anyone else.. If I remember correctly, it features sautéed sweet potato, kale, curry, etc. It sounded different, so I thought I'd try it, and I'm really glad I did!
Wendy Hanson March 15, 2012 at 12:46 pm
Ingrid and Johanna-I am going to get to The Little House Cafe this week!
Thanks!

Woke me from a dead sleep. Sounded like 6 or 9 gun shots north of Melrose on Maitland DR.

When they build that high density development on the Harbor Bay Club site with 25% low incomeRead More housing requirement, Bay Farm will be hearing a lot more gun shots at night.
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) June 12, 2013 at 11:42 am
So sad to see. Did you report this to East Bay Regional Park District? I provided the number in yourRead More last posting.
Lorraine Sarullo June 12, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Yes, I reported it to the EBRP staff who happened to be nearby at the beach. I also reported it toRead More the warden of Fish and Wildlife in Sacramento and the warden of the local territory. The local warden told me yesterday that he will be patrolling the area, but I did not get to speak to him today (only left both wardens a voicemail message).

Nice, thanks for the update, and sharing these posts with us, Lorraine. If it is a person behind allRead More of this, hopefully he/she will get caught soon.

Anonymous tip to the fire department?

Leaving a note to them is a bad idea if it really is a illegal operation. So many ways that can goRead More wrong. Just call the police dept. Leave a tip. Simple and safe.
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) June 13, 2013 at 09:03 am
Agree with Carol. Perhaps an anonymous tip to Alameda Fire or Alameda Police.

Given the targeted harvesting of parts, this is not a "times are hard and food is scarce"Read More issue. It's greedy, ignorant, and yes it's disgusting and disrespectful to nature. http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/extinction-countdown/2012/01/17/manta-rays-endangered-by-sudden-demand-from-chinese-medicine/

Thank you both (Nay and Analisa) for the information. Maybe I got the name of the park serviceRead More mixed up. It was the beach area around Grand St.

I contacted Crown Beach (part of the EBRP). They checked into the matter with Fish and WildlifeRead More (previously Fish and Game), to see if there was any wrongdoing. On the surface of things, it seems the wings (fins) are the edible part of the ray. And apparently, the way regulations are written it may not be even be considered littering! So, however inhumane, disrespectful, selfish, gruesome it may seem, there may not have been any fishing laws broken. Although, when I spoke with the warden of Fish and Wildlife he said he will be looking into the matter. To voice your opinion and propose changes to regulation, you can write a letter to and attend a Fish and Game Commission town hall meeting here is the link: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/contact/ and http://www.fgc.ca.gov/meetings/2013/index.aspx I plan on writing to suggest regulation against polluting public beaches with unused portions of the catch from fishing and also ask for recommendations on limiting the catch on fish that only have small percentage of edible parts (such as the rays). I would welcome any help in a letter writing campaign, the contact information is listed on the link provided above. Many Thanks.
