VIDEO: Behind the Scenes at Tesla Model S Unveiling

Tesla's first mass-production car rolled off the assembly line to uproarious applause.

Governor Jerry Brown joined Tesla CEO Elon Musk, 2,000 employees, and numerous business and political leaders last Friday for the debut of the Model S, a premium electric sedan with a range of up to 300 miles and a price tag of $49,000 to $97,900 (after a $7,500 federal tax credit), depending on model and options.

The automobiles were manufactured at the old NUMMI plant in Fremont, which closed two years ago amid allegations of mismanagement and fraud.
