Join the Parade! There is Still Time!

Apply to get your "marching orders" by June 17.

The standing joke in town is that if you're not watching the Alameda Mayor's Annual 4th of July Parade you're probably IN it.

That's just about true. With 170 floats, 2,500 parade participants and 20,000 onlookers this is the Grand Dame of Bay Area 4th of July parades. In fact, its three-mile route makes it the second longest 4th of July parade in the nation.

Ask anyone who has lived here for awhile and they will undoubtably tell you about marching in the parade at some point in time. (Off the top of my head I remember my own family members marching with the Scouts, Little League, Lincoln Middle School, the Alameda Food Bank, Temple Israel and soccer contingents over the years).

Parade entries run the gamut. Check out the photos of the parade over the years, some dating back to the early 1900s.  You can also go to the homepage of this site and apply to participate. Deadline to apply is noon on June 17.

If you have marched in the parade - what memories do you have? My favorite stretch is Central Avenue under the sycamore trees (shade, blessed shade) where a very cool group of onlookers hang and help cheer you on during that last home stretch.
