Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry Service Expected to Resume Thursday

There has been no ferry service from Harbor Bay since last week.

Bay City News Service - Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry service was canceled for the third day in a row today as crews worked to shore up the dock in Alameda, where two weather-worn pilings failed Sunday, a ferry spokesman said.

The pilings, which support the weight of the dock, were worn down by the waves caused by high winds over the weekend, Chief Operating Officer Tim Hoppen said.

Normal saltwater wear and metal fatigue also contributed to the failure, he said.

There has been no ferry service since Monday morning. Two temporary pilings were put in place this morning. After engineers assess the effectiveness of the replacement pilings later today, Hoppen said he expects regular ferry service to resume Thursday.

"I'm confident it will back tomorrow," he said.
