'Alameda Heritage Day' Replacing Fourth of July Jubilee

Due to a drop in attendance and sponsorship over the years, the City of Alameda will no longer hold a jubilee following the Mayor's 4th of July Parade. They will replace this event with an Alameda Heritage Day in September.

The City of Alameda will no longer have a jubilee following the Mayor's 4th of July Parade.

Amy Wooldridge, Recreation and Park Department Director, said attendance has dropped significantly over the years. Last year's jubilee included food, a jumphouse for kids and other activities.

Wooldridge said families usually go off and have their own barbecues or participate in other activities.

"We've also been losing various sponsorship over the years," she added.

However, she said funding used for this event will now go towards a new initiative: Alameda Heritage Day.

"We wanted to try something new and fresh," she said.

The event, expected to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, will feature an art fair, family activities, music, food and aquatic demonstrations — all of which focus on Alameda's historical roots.

Wooldridge couldn't provide specifics since the event is still in its planning stages but said it will definitely be worth checking out.
