Capitol Flags at Half-Staff for Local Soldier

Gov. Jerry Brown ordered flags over the State Capitol flown at half-staff May 15 in honor of Staff Sgt. Thomas K. Fogarty of Alameda, who died in Afghanistan.

Flags flew at half-staff over the State Capitol today, Tuesday, in honor of Staff Sgt. Thomas K. Fogarty of Alameda, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 6.

Gov. Jerry Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown "extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time," acccording to the Governor's Office.

Staff Sgt. Fogarty’s family will receive a letter of condolence from Gov. Brown, his office said.

Fogarty, 30, died from injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicle with an improvised explosive device, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. You may read more about the circumstances of his death in this article.
