Community Mourns Young Teen's Death; Police say Investigation Ongoing

Students, parents, families and neighbors are mourning the , a seventh grader.

Sorenson was hit by an SUV Monday afternoon at the intersection of Santa Clara Avenue and Everett Street. He taken to Oakland's Children's Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

At Lincoln Middle School, grief counselors were on hand Tuesday to discuss the tragedy. A student-organized memorial is planned for this Friday after school at the site of the accident.

Alameda Police Department spokesman Lt. Sean Lynch said no details of the investigation could be released, but that the major accident division was conducting a careful investigation of the fatal accident.

"The driver was cooperative and remained at the scene," Lynch said. "We are conducting our investigation as thoroughly as possible."
