Five Things: Public Meetings Galore, Top-Flight Films, the Beatles Resurrected on High Street

Balance your week with a few from this column (important meetings about local issues) and few from that column (really dumb movies).

  1. Who knew that the thespian who gave us the indefatigable Captain Kirk made films? Find out more at (William) at the Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge Monday when they screen the movies Incubus and Impulse. Also, this summer’s at the Alameda Theatre starts Wednesday night with Hangover II, a film of great depth and meaning, a gentle exploration of male friendship viewed through the lens of an educational travelogue of southeast Asia. Or not.
  2. Beatles fan? Hear the at High Street Station Wednesday as performed by The Goners.
  3. Don’t forget…lane restriping on Park Street between Lincoln and the bridge will slow down traffic after 9 a.m. today (Monday).
  4. Alameda Architectural Preservation Society presents a lecture on on Thursday evening with author Arrol Gellner, whose book on the topic includes Alameda’s Stonehenge and Stoneleigh homes.
  5. A plethora of community involvement opportunities this week: BikeAlameda’s is getting together at Otaez restaurant Monday evening. The Alameda City Council will meet in closed session Tuesday to discuss former Fire Chief David Kapler’s lawsuit against the city and the purchase of property at Pacific and Orion Street. The second of two meetings exploring the  at will be at the Main Library Tuesday with the city auditor and treasurer on hand. The looks Tuesday at the governor’s revised budget and its impact on Alameda schools, and gets together again Wednesday for a (topic as yet unclear). The city is putting on the first of three workshops on specific issues at Alameda Point on Thursday with at . The League of Women Voters is hosting a Thursday, which allows participants to better understand the difficulties of making the Golden State’s finances balance. Finally, the meets Thursday with a full agenda.

Plan ahead: Back at Forbidden Island on Memorial Day weekend, there’s an May 29 offering a wide range of island culture, including fresh lei making, hula dance, live music, ukulele lessons and a pig roast.
