Summer Events at the Chabot Space & Science Center

Lots to do and see!

As summer arrives, here are some events at Chabot Space & Science Center.

Chabot’s expanded summer hours begin with the summer solstice on Tuesday, June 21: Tuesday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed July 4.

General admission to the center is $10.95 to $14.95. Unless otherwise noted, events listed below are included in the general admission fee.

July 2-July 3, Museums on Us: free admission for Bank of America cardholders (first full weekend of every month)

Tuesdays in July — Summer Science Saving, $10 general admission every Tuesday in the month of July.

They're hosting a public viewing (on the MegaDome theater screen) of NASA’s last scheduled space shuttle launch on Friday, July 8. The shuttle Atlantis is currently scheduled to lift off at 8:30 a.m. and the center will have experts and shuttle fans on hand to share this historic launch.

Summer Movies at Chabot

Friday and Saturday nights, July 1, 2, 8, 15, 16, 22 and 23. Showings at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Fridays are "docufilm," Saurdays sci-fi. Sci-Fi shows include a planetarium show or movie.

Discovery Lab 

Chabot’s Discovery Lab, an activity room specifically for ages 2 to 7, will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bike It! 

 More highlights include:

• Lego solar bike building

• Test riding bikes for a future purchase

• A space-themed bike skills course

There’s a bike valet for those who would like to explore the Center after riding. Professionals will be on hand to answer questions about fit, helmets, attaching a child tow and more. Family friendly, but you don't have to have a kid to join in on the fun. 

Water Rockets

Tuesday, July 5, through Friday, Aug. 5, 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Use air pressure and water to propel two-liter bottle rockets into the sky. Decorate your rocket, then safely launch it up to 50 feet in the air. 

Slumber with the Stars

A family/group overnight7 p.m. Friday, July 15, to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16.

An overnight in the center includes exhibit exploration, shows, a hike in the redwoods and viewing through the historic, large telescopes (weather permitting). A minimum of one adult for every five kids is required. Minimum age of participants is 5 years old. Tickets start at $75 members/$85 guests. Special pricing available for families of four or more.  Advance reservations required. To register, call 510-336-7373.

Moonlight Hike

Friday, July 15, 7-9:30 p.m.

A moderately strenuous yet serene five-mile hike in the redwoods, guided by an experienced hiker. Your guide will meet you in the main lobby at 7 p.m. After the hike, stay and view the night sky through Chabot's telescopes. Hike will take place rain or shine. Tickets: $7 (does not include admission into the Center). For tickets, call 510-336-7373. Space is limited. Advance reservations recommended.

Coffee with the Stars

Friday, July 15, 7-10 p.m.

Stargazers on Chabot’s observatory decks can warm themselves with free coffee courtesy of Peet’s Coffee & Tea.

Kitchen Chemistry

Saturday, July 23, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Join Fenton’s Creamery and Peet’s Coffee & Tea for a day of Kitchen Chemistry. Chabot’s teen volunteers, the Galaxy Explorers, will make edible and inedible concoctions and demonstrations as visitors observe the chemical transformations. Create chemical reactions with acids and bases, slime, food, candy, plants and more.
