Tsunami: Little Impact Expected on the Bay

Port of Oakland operational, Alameda beaches open, noncommercial craft advised to stay off water as a precaution.

A Coast Guard spokesman this morning said that they expected little impact to Alameda from a tsunami in the San Francisco Bay.

The National Weather Service says the initial wave from a tsunami generated by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off the northeast coast of Japan Thursday night could hit San Francisco at 8:08 a.m. Friday.

"Basically it really shouldn’t affect anywhere except up near the Golden Gate Bridge," said Spokesman Levi Read. "We don't expect anything on the Bay to be in any danger. We would ask people to stay away from the water just in case."

Read said the Port of Oakland is operating and ferries are running. Non-commercial craft are being advised to stay off the water, he said.

Just after 7:30 a.m. this morning BART announced that its trains would be running on schedule.

"The surge is not going to affect the Bay," Read said. "But there might be a little more motion in the water."
