USS Hornet Decked Out for Independence Day

The aircraft carrier turned museum goes all out to celebrate the Fourth of July

With bands such as the aptly named Mighty NepTunes and Starboard Watch on deck, the USS Hornet plans to celebrate Independence Day with live music and activities for the whole family.

They also hope to attract the crowds, said spokesperson Madeline McEntyre. Last year about 1,600 people showed up at the annual 4th of July celebration and this year, she would love to see up to 3,000 people partake of the festivities.

“Our hope is to fund raise so we can keep afloat,” said McEntyre, who’s in charge of tours and booking for the USS Hornet Museum.

Proceeds from Monday’s event will go toward the USS Hornet’s education program and the upkeep of the ship. “It’s a big ship and it takes a lot of money to maintain it,” said McEntyre. She noted that the museum is a nonprofit organization and relies on private funding and donations.

So the USS Hornet will be abuzz. Open from 1 to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 4, the many decks of the historic aircraft carrier will be replete with things never seen aboard during its days as a working U.S. Navy ship: carnival games, a bounce house for kids and a live concert that runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Those who come aboard can explore three decks of the ship, see an exhibit of the Apollo Moon Mission and ride the flight simulator through a jet fighter mission.

Food and beverages, including wine and beer, will be served up by Joe's Grill and Jose's Cantina.

After the concert, guests are invited to remain on board and enjoy a view of Bay Area fireworks from the flight deck.

Tickets are $25 for adults ($20 in advance) and $10 for ages 5-17. Museum members get in free.
