popUp
Gallery at 1517 Park Street in Alameda continues to build its reputation as one
of the East Bay’s finest galleries with another outstanding exhibition – “Up
Close” – opening on Friday, July 12.
In
just one short year, popUp Gallery has established itself on the Bay Area art
scene as a venue of significance. By setting a central theme for each show and
inviting artists to explore that theme, Directors Gabriele Bungardt and
Mi’Chelle Fredrick present collections that maintain their continuity while
showcasing the individuality of the artists. The work provokes the imagination
and invites viewers to bring their own interpretations to each carefully
selected piece.
“Up
Close” features 8 Bay Area artists whose work stimulates the visual and tactile
senses while inviting the viewer into the tantalizing worlds of memory, emotion
and interpersonal relationships. Sculptors Maya Whitner and Estelle Akamine
create richly textured pieces that undulate with a sensuality that defies their
construction of metal and fiber. Photographers Nikki Schrager and Stephanie
Rigsby capture subtle shifts of light and shadow in ways that beckon us to look
closer to unravel the mystery of their work.
Printmaker
Carrie Ann Plank layers familiar imagery and ideas within unexpected contexts
that often call for a double take, while the mixed media pieces of Dolores R.
Gray entice the viewer into worlds made up of memory and metaphor.
Gabriele
Bundardt’s life-size paintings expose the ambiguity
of complex subliminal messages delivered through body language and gesture. The graphite drawings of Mi’Chelle Fredrick study
sight, sound and touch and their place in intimate relationships.
This
highly anticipated collection is a feast for the senses. Don’t miss it. Get “Up
