What better way to celebrate the Fourth of July  than onboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. Once again the USS Hornet Museum is hosting its annual family-friendly Independence Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday, July 4. The public is invited to enjoy a fun-filled day of entertainment, food and interactive games for all ages. Visitors are invited to stay to view and enjoy panoramic views of Bay Area fireworks from the ship’s flight deck.

The ship is permanently berthed at 707 W. Hornet Avenue, Pier 3 in Alameda. There is ample free parking across from the pier.

From 1-8 p.m. guests can take part in a variety of carnival and table-top games inside the Hangar Deck. The flight deck will host a bounce house and other inflatable games for all ages.

Live entertainment begins at 2 p.m. on the Flight Deck. Guests can enjoy sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay.  Bands scheduled to perform are: Tempest, Michael Sea and Island Fever, The Cocktail Monkey’s, and the Mighty NepTunes. And as guests wait for the fireworks show, they will be entertained by DJ Nikki Blakk from the Bone’s 107.7 FM from 7-9 p.m.

Throughout the day, guests can explore the many decks of the legendary aircraft carrier. Open for public tour are the flight deck, hangar bays, engine room, flight operations, captain’s bridge, ship’s hospital, combat information center and torpedo shop. Exhibits include the West Coast’s largest Apollo Moon Mission display and more than a dozen aircraft ranging from WWII vintage to modern era. Visitors can get a close-up look at a TBM Avenger, an F-14 Tomcat, and a helicopter from the “Apollo 13” movie.

One of the highlights is a chance to ride the flight simulator through a jet fighter mission.

A great selection of food, beer and wine will be available for purchase during the event.

All-day admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 5-17. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 510-521-8448 x 282 or visit www.hornetevents.com.

Proceeds benefit the Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and support the preservation of the historic aircraft carrier and the educational programs of the USS Hornet Museum.
