Love What You've Done with the Place

Love camping, but hate being too far from civilization? Then this is the place for you. Flophouse-style camping, right in your own backyard!

Took a nice walk to the Alameda Marketplace last Friday and on my way back, gazed forlornly at what was , hoping we’ll see it again this year.

I strolled around the crumbling concrete and got a closer look at the huts, built for the concessions and gift shop, and saw that not only are the glass windows busted out, but we’ve got a nice little urban campsite happening in there. How long has that been going on?

I drive down to the Salton Sea fairly often to photograph fascinating scenes of urban decay — an area that was once imagined to become the new Palm Springs — abandoned for decades to rot in the desert sun. It’s something you never see in the Bay Area, but now Alameda has its own little corner of rot and neglect.

Who owns this lot? Does the city know this is going on? Do the police?

It would be great to see that lot secured so no more damage is done and maybe preserve the chance that the Little Skating Rink will return again this year.
