Is there an alternative to Alameda when it comes to home buying?

Those of us who were fortunate to buy a home here love the island for various reasons. For me it's the weather, the beach, Park St and the Webster St, meeting a lot of different families with a common theme (young children), the many parks that we have, in a phrase "Feeling like I'm cut off from the rest of the world".

That said, the change in the market conditions over the last year has led to an exodus on the Island. Families have no choice but to look elsewhere. Not only have home prices skyrocketed but so has the rental market. Simply put, there are no options on the island.

So in my search for homes to help families find a community that has a similar feel I have been falling in love with the Montclair Village area. Yes, the retail area is charming and has a farmers market, peets, starbucks, etc. and just like Alameda I love the weather, it has a lot of families, great schools, is safe and an added benefit, very close to Rockridge Bart station. So what else do I love about it? Other than the increased options that people have and the affordability/value is the proximity to HUGE East Bay parks. The entire area reaches from Grizzly Peak which extends to Tilden (you don't have to go through the tunnel) to Joaquin Miller Park. In that distance there are Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, Huckleberry Botanical Preserve and Roberts Park, Joaquin Miller and Redwood Regional Park. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=shepards+canyon&ll=37.826192,-122.180157&spn=0.067795,0.169086&fb=1&gl=us&hq=shepards+canyon&hnear=0x808f80d8f2cf1595:0x66ff99cf60016f14,Alameda,+CA&cid=0,0,5821385422322330910&t=h&z=13

With that amount of open space  I do not feel like I'm in a big city at all. In fact, it's like your surrounded by an ocean of trees and you really do feel "cut-off from the world".

Current home prices start at $579,000 (2 bedroom) all others are 3 and 4 bedrooms homes with the smallest lot measuring 6,600 sq ft. (crazy I know).

So if you have been wondering what else is out there, take a look a Montclair you might get lost in their wilderness and not want to come back.
The link is a current list of homes available priced under $800,000 and if any peak your interest feel free to give me a call.
