If You're a Political Junkie - Go to A Convention

Leslie's Convention Experience - Monday, September 3, 2012

My day on Monday started with a 4:15 a.m. wake-up call to prepare to get to LaGuardia Airport in New York City, so that I could make my way to Charlotte.

I had my Obama button on my sweater and folks from the sky-cap to the flight attendents knew I was making my way to the convention.

Fellow delegates in the airport became instant comrades with a like goal to re-elect President Obama.

The day has been electrifying and exciting. Upon arriving in Charlotte we encountered a genuine welcome to the city.  I went directly to the California delegation headquarter hotel and did my first daily registration - with a mission to get my husband registered as a guest so he can experience this amazing moment in history, too.

With our registration credentials in hand, we made our way to a street fair called CarolinaFest and enjoyed local fare and the creative talents of the local vendors.

Then the remnants of Hurricane Isaac reared its ugly head - the skies opened in a fierce downpour, while the tempature remained in the low 90s - no fun for a girl raised in Oakland.

We found shelter in a local restaurant and waited out the storm with locals and fellow delegates. When we left the restaurant, we ran into Oakland Mayor Jean Quan on the street. I introduced myself and had a nice conversation with her.

I next found myself being asked for an interview by press from Germany - surreal.

We made our way back to the hotel and changed for a reception being hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus. We met with Democratic leaders and networked ideas on how to get out the vote.

We left the reception and attended a concert featuring John Legend and the Roots Band - amazing. It's now midnight, I'm tired and but looking forward to starting this again tomorrow. The California delegates have a breakfast featuring speakers Donna Brazile, Congressman John Lewis and Congresswoman Barbara Lee to name a few.

Tomorrow features the much anticipated speech from First Lady Michelle Obama - I'll tell you all about it tomorrow.  Now I'm going to watch "Obama Revealed" on CNN and go to sleep - check back for daily updates on my convention experience.

Represent Leslie (oh and Keith you too). I love the President for having the courage to try and reconnect this country. No matter what political affiliation, I am sure attending a political convention is a dream come true. Enjoy and please keep us posted (literally) :) Smooches Cousins, Candice in Texas (Obama fan 4 Life)
