How Will You Celebrate Valentine's Day?

Cuddle up at home? A night out on a town? Nose to the grindstone?

I have never been a big fan of holidays. It is quite possibly a genetic trait. My father rejected almost all ritualized traditions as overly formal.

That said, when my children were born, first one and then the other (as is usually, though not always, the case), I felt their birthdays were a big deal. A year of life as a human! Especially a young one! That's something to celebrate.

So we had some big birthday parties.

But Valentine's Day? Not so sure. I'm more of a love-well, be-kind-all-day-every-day person than a big hearts and chocolate gal.

But I do like a nice dinner. And I do like good wine. And I do like breakfast in bed. And I do like time together, a pause from the pace of our lives.

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? What do you have in the works for this year?

Before kids we used to do the romantic dinner out thing. (If anyone says "Oh we don't need a national holiday to be romantic, ask them when was the last time they did do something romantic. For us, we needed the holiday to remind us. :) Since our oldest was a toddler, Valentine's Day has become a family celebration of Love. We decorate our living room with hearts and flowers, set the coffee table for a special meal, and make a heart-shaped cake. Another tradition we've sort of fallen into is we take family photos every Valentine's Day. Looking at past photos, it is fun to see how the kids have grown from year to year. And everyone always looks nice dressed up in red and pink.

You mean for single-people-are-losers day? That's what it feels like to me...
