The aim of the gathering was to highlight the cluster of organizations that provide services to youth and families on Alameda's West End. It was held at the site of the former Woodstock Elementary School, which now houses the Multicultural Center, Alternatives in Action, Island High School, the Cadet Corps and the Alameda Boys & Girls Club.

People attending the event were also invited to view a documentary about the West End filmed between 2002-2007, and produced by the Koshland Program of the San Francico Foundation. In 2004, a Koshland-sponsored Unity Day was held at Chipman Middle School.
