'Not in Our Town' Film Screening April 16

A panel discussion will follow the film, which chronicles a town coming together to take action after anti-immigrant violence

A screening of the acclaimed film Not in Our Town: Light in the Darkness will be held April 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the College of Alameda Student Lounge, Building F, 555 Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway.

The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a panel discussion.

The documentary tells the story of a town coming together to take action after anti-immigrant violence devastates the community. In 2008, a series of attacks against Latino residents of Patchogue, NY culminated with the murder of Marcelo Lucero, an Ecuadorian immigrant who had lived in the Long Island village for 13 years. Over a two-year period, this documentary follows Mayor Paul Pontiere, the victim's brother Joselo Lucero and Patchogue residents as they openly address the underlying causes of the violence, work to heal divisions and begin taking steps to ensure everyone in their village will be safe and respected.
